When Is Picky Eating Actually a Problem?

As feeding therapists, we have treated such a spectrum of picky eating- from children who eat a large variety of foods but are selective, all the way to children who only have a handful of foods in their diet. We have treated children who eat mostly crunchy snacks, avoid meats or vegetables, or fill up on milk instead of food. Picky eating is such a spectrum- so when is it actually a problem for your child?
Our answer may not be what you think, and it all has to do with YOUR family.

Picky eating is a problem when it is impacting your family, your stress level, or your child's overall well being. That's it. It is a problem when you as the parent feel like it's a problem.
We have heard so many parents tell us things like, "they're so picky, mealtime is a disaster," or "I have to make their favorite foods or they won't eat," and we can feel the stress coming from them. Then, because parents think that this is just a normal part of childhood, they always follow up with some sort of, "but it's fine!" And we always think... but it does not sound fine to you. It does not have to be this way for you or your child.
It is not okay if your child's picky eating is impacting your enjoyment of feeding your child. It is not okay if you're stressed or worried about your child's nutrition, despite the fact that their pediatrician says they are growing fine. You do not have to suffer through parenting a picky eater because someone has told you that it was normal, or that their child was picky too. Picky eating is common, but that does not mean that you have to "wait and see" before you get support.

There is support for parents of picky eaters. There are strategies that can help you manage your child's picky eating so that mealtimes are not so stressful. There are small and attainable changes that you can make that will make a huge difference in your child's eating. Picky eating does not have to be the norm for kids, parents and families.
If you are struggling with your child's picky eating, and wish it were different for them, for you or for your family as a whole... reach out to us. We would be happy to support you, direct you to resources that can help, and guide you through your journey to improve your child's eating.
